The Responsibilities of a Scrum Master

“I feel great sympathy for many of the people who find themselves in the Scrum Master role, as it’s very difficult, often misunderstood, and there’s very little specific guidance on how to perform the role well”

- Geoff Watts, Scrum Mastery

I remember resonating with Geoff’s quote when I first became a Scrum Master. And while the responsibilities of the role have gotten clearer over the past decade within the Agile community, I would argue that the responsibilities of the Scrum Master still vary quite a bit depending on the organization you are working with. With so much variance, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the responsibilities of the role continue to be a mystery for many both inside and outside the world of project management.

Scrum is designed to help teams deliver high-quality products in a short amount of time through iterative development cycles called "sprints." The Scrum Master is a facilitator who helps the team follow scrum values, practices, and rules. The role of the Scrum Master is crucial to the success of the project, as they are responsible for helping the team work together effectively and efficiently.

Here are the key responsibilities of a Scrum Master:

  1. Facilitating scrum events: The Scrum Master is responsible for facilitating the daily stand-up meetings, sprint planning sessions, sprint review sessions, and sprint retrospective meetings. These meetings are an essential part of the scrum process and are designed to help the team stay focused and on track.

  2. Removing barriers: A Scrum Master is responsible for helping the team identify and remove any barriers that may be preventing them from making progress. This may involve working with other stakeholders, such as the product owner, to resolve issues and ensure the team has what it needs to be successful.

  3. Coaching the team: The Scrum Master is responsible for coaching the team on the scrum framework and helping them to improve their skills and practices. This may involve providing guidance on how to effectively estimate work, write user stories, or use other agile techniques.

  4. Protecting the team: The Scrum Master is responsible for protecting the team from external distractions and interruptions. They should work to create a safe and collaborative environment where the team can focus on their work.

  5. Promoting transparency: The Scrum Master is responsible for promoting transparency within the team and with other stakeholders. This includes keeping the sprint backlog up to date and ensuring that the team is regularly sharing progress and status updates.

In summary, the Scrum Master plays a vital role in helping the team deliver high-quality products in a fast and efficient manner. They facilitate the scrum process, remove barriers, coach the team, protect the team, and promote transparency.
